Miller has no shortage of plays that elicit a “WOW” when looking through his snaps. For this play, Miller is fluid with his hands and swim move. As a result, he maintains excellent momentum heading out to block at the next level. Play 2One of the reasons Sean McDermott was looking to tinker at right guard is undoubtedly Miller’s ability to turn in a different kind of “WOW” play. Contrasting to Play 1, there’s essentially no difference in how fast the defender reaches the quarterback. The issue is that, unlike in Play 1, Miller was supposed to be trying to block. Miller’s weaknesses seem to creep up more against speed and finesse players. Generally speaking, if Miller loses to the first step, the second and third ones only make matters worse. Play 3We have a nice microcosm of Miller for this clip. The initial block to help out Russell Bodine and the second, solo block are both good. Unfortunately, though, Miller doesn’t stay on the second block and then is unable to choose who to hit next. The end result is that he’s effective through about half of the play. Here’s a fun tangent. This is the second play where Miller taps Bodine’s leg. This is the Buffalo Bills’ cue for a silent snap count. A potential issue with the line in 2018 may have been related to this habit. While the Bills aren’t the only team that uses an obvious visible cue the defense can see, they were pretty predictable with the timing. After a short amount of practice I felt pretty comfortable timing their snap based on the tap from Miller. That’s not necessarily a knock on Miller alone, but a possible factor in the overall performance of the line. Play 4When it comes to raw tools, John Miller has the goods. We’ve talked up Star Lotulelei for his ability to take on a double team and here Miller is acting as a similar space eater. Both Russell Bodine and Jordan Mills have a little trouble with their block and Miller is able to help them out at the same time. Play 5Speaking of raw tools, this is a solid move block with a nice change of direction and finish. Chris Ivory gets a chunk of yards and John Miller is a big reason why. This play is absolutely more highlight reel than norm, but illustrates what Miller is capable of. Play 6Miller’s feet take him back a few short steps before he can anchor, but in the end this isn’t a bad block. Derek Anderson can’t fully step up if needed so it’s not a tremendous block either for the record. Still, it got the job done. For quality of competition, Miller is up against Margus Hunt. The 6’8” nearly 300 lb defensive lineman is absurdly strong and athletic. While Hunt is also inconsistent Matt Milano Jersey , he looks like he’s on his game for this clip so an “alright block” should get a small bump when we grade it. For comparison purposes Hunt graded nearly identically to Tremaine Edmunds in the 40-yard dash and broad jump but doubled Edmunds’ bench press numbers (Hunt matched Star Lotululei on the bench). They’re riding a seven-game winning streak in which – get this! – the defense has been as stellar as the offense. As usual, Drew Brees has the passing game humming, and the contributions of the running back tandem of Mark Ingram and rookie Alvin Kamara has made New Orleans even more dynamic with the ball. Without it, the Saints rank eighth overall on D and have found a pass rush that will trouble Kirk Cousins and the banged-up Redskins. Washington is one franchise Saints coach Sean Payton has had little success in facing. He’s 1-4 against the Redskins. Look for the Jaguars to run aplenty with rookie Leonard Fournette. Yes, Cleveland has the fourth-ranked rush defense, but Jacksonville tops the NFL in rushing. Detroit (5-4) at Chicago (3-6) Detroit has dominated this matchup recently, winning seven of eight. This could be a bit of a trap game, though, because the Lions entertain the NFC North leaders, Minnesota, on Thanksgiving Day. This one could come down to the running game. Detroit ranks 29th rushing the ball, but did manage 104 yards on 19 carries in a win over Cleveland. Baltimore has the league’s worst passing attack, but throwing against the Ravens can be dangerous: Baltimore leads the NFL with 13 interceptions. Arizona (4-5) at Houston (3-6) The Cardinals’ year of injuries now forces Bruce Arians to start his third-string QB, Blaine Gabbert. Drew Stanton hurt his knee in a loss to Seattle, and starter Carson Palmer (broken arm) is out. That probably means an even fuller load for Adrian Peterson, who already has been a workhorse in Arizona since coming over in a trade last month. Houston will honor the best offensive player in franchise history, Andre Johnson, as the inaugural member of the Texans Ring of Honor. Miami has been outscored 112-45 while losing its past three games, and has been outscored by 87 points this season, fourth worst in the NFL. The Dolphins haven’t even led at the start of the fourth quarter all season. Now they face a Tampa Bay defense that found its pass rush in a win over the Jets last Sunday with six sacks. But the Bucs also have problems with the ball, scoring a total of 28 points in their past three matches. Cincinnati (3-6) at Denver (3-6) Cincinnati has lost 10 in a row at Denver. It even fell to past and returned QB Brock Osweiler in overtime two years ago during the Broncos’ championship season. Few teams have been more disappointing this season than the Broncos, whose defense has sprung leaks all over the place – in part because of the demands placed on it by an unreliable offense.
