LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- With Maryland playing shaky and facing a possible first loss, freshmen Destiny Slocum and Kaila Charles steadied matters with poised contributions that got the fifth-ranked Terrapins past Louisville.Charles scored the go-ahead basket with 2:20 remaining, and Slocum followed with seven points to help Maryland beat Louisville 78-72 on Thursday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Terrapins (7-0) seemed in control with a 62-53 lead entering the fourth quarter before Louisville rallied to lead twice, including 67-65 with 3:15 left. Charles followed Brionna Jones game-tying layup with another before Slocums three-point play provided a 72-67 edge that she added to with four more free throws in finishing with 13 points. Charles scored all eight points after halftime. You know, its just playing basketball, said Slocum, who made six of her final seven free throws after missing her first two. I mean, Ive been in this moment before. I have two veteran players on our team that really led us. We knew what to do because they told us what to do. ... And in that moment we needed to lock in, play defense, have good offense, and I think thats what we did.Indeed, those newcomers followed good examples set by Marylands upperclassmen.Senior guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (26 points) made two free throws with 4 seconds left to seal Marylands victory in the first regular-season meeting between the schools. Jones, another senior, added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Terps, who made 23 of 28 from the foul line.I thought our vets, Shatori and Bri, really led us in the first half so we could settle in and see all these new players from game to game, Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. Kaila Charles took until about the third quarter to be able to step up. Kristen Confroy (six points) gave us great minutes, her boards. ... Youre going to see that with our depth all season where different players (are) ready when their number is called.Asia Durr scored 20 points and Myisha Hines-Allen 16 for Louisville (6-2), which lost its second game in five days against a Top 5 team. They also fell for the third time in four games against Maryland. The sad thing about it is we came up with like six stops, seven stops in a row, starting the fourth quarter, said Louisville coach Jeff Walz, a former Maryland assistant. But then when it becomes crunch time, you take a two-point lead and God forbid, thats when you have to get one. And we just refuse. Its our upperclassmen, unfortunately.THE BIG PICTUREMaryland: The Terrapins shot at least 50 percent in the first three quarters before cooling off to 31 percent in the fourth and allowing Louisville to rally. They still finished at 48 percent. Walker-Kimbrough and Brionna Jones combined for 10 unanswered points during a game-changing run in the second quarter and led by as many as 10 twice in the second half. The Terps offset 18 turnovers by owning the boards 48-35 and keeping their main players in the game despite foul trouble.Louisville: The Cardinals stayed close by forcing 10 Maryland turnovers in the first half, but fouls were a concern with four having at least two at the break. Mariya Moore eventually fouled out after scoring 13 points. The Cardinals shot 39 percent overall and just 36 percent in the final quarter. Their lone bright spots were a 44-32 edge in the paint and 20 points off turnovers.POLL IMPLICATIONSMaryland figures to stay near the top five, while Louisville could take a tumble out of the top 10. PHOENIX -- With his team struggling to score runs behind him, Cliff Lee pitched in himself. Lee threw seven scoreless innings and helped out with three sacrifice bunts as the Philadelphia Phillies beat Arizona 3-1 Saturday night, ending the Diamondbacks five-game winning streak. "It feels good to bunt a guy over and watch him score," said Lee, who said he hadnt been asked to bunt in three straight plate appearances before. "It makes you feel like you contributed." In fact, twice Lees bunts set up runs. Lee (4-2) gave up six hits, struck out three and walked two in winning consecutive road starts for the first time since August 2011. Philadelphia had been shut out in two of Lees past starts and the Phillies have scored 23 runs total in his seven starts -- eight coming in one game. "I just need to keep grinding and give the team a chance to win every time," he said. The Diamondbacks threatened against Lee only once, loading the bases with two outs in the seventh while trailing 2-0 before Wil Nieves grounded out. "I really didnt pay attention to the bullpen, to be honest with you," Lee said. "I never want to come out, and with the bases loaded, for sure." Jimmy Rollins had two hits and drove in two runs. Domonic Brown added an RBI single in the seventh for the Phillies, who snapped a three-game losing streak. "I usually have success when I get runners on, though not so much this year," Rollins said. "Obviously, you adjust your swing because youve got to get a good swing first. Now that Im starting to get there, the confidence comes that I can put on the same swing in any situation." Jonathan Papelbon pitched the final 1 2-3 innings for his sixth save in as many chances. The Diamondbacks put runners on second and third against Papelbon with one out in the ninth. He struck out pinch-hitter Eric Hinske and A.J. Pollock for his first five-out save since July 14, 2012, at Colorado. Pollock had doubled twice earlier. "Yeah, I asked him to do it," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "But I dont like doing that." Arizona starter Trevor Cahill (2-4) could commiserate with Lees lack of offensive support. The Diamondbacks have scored 22 runs in his seven starts, nine coming in a 9-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 6. "We had a chance to wwin tonight but things didnt go our way," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.dddddddddddd "Any runs that they tacked on, you know its going to make it tougher on yourself." Cahill allowed only three hits and one run in five innings, struck out five but walked four. "I felt like I was fighting myself the whole time," Cahill said. The Phillies manufactured a run to take a 1-0 lead in the fifth. Ben Revere walked, was sacrificed to second by Lee, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep centre by Rollins. Philadelphia made it 2-0 in the seventh when Revere singled off Josh Collmenter, stole second, moved up on Lees third bunt and scored when Rollins singled. Michael Young walked and later scored on Browns single against Tony Sipp in the eighth to extend the Phillies lead to 3-0. "We just need to stay balanced," Manuel said. "We dont need to get down or anything. We need to stay even-keeled and come out every day like were going to hit, keep your head up and keep going at it. If you dont hit, there aint anything you can do about it but go out and try to be more prepared the next day."
